1. Rent start at USD 1600 and go up to USD 10,000 at Maadi where most of the expat stay. Traffic is bad in cairo so I would suggest you should stay close to your office
2. Car are costly here Car like lance will cost you EGP 3500 P.M. + Driver EGP 1000 to EGP 1500
3. Not aware about social life at all. I reached here 10 days before only.
4. You may find Egypt costly by 10 to 30%.

I'm trying to get a cost estimate. For a student living in the Zamelek neighborhood and attending classes at AUC, what would be a reasonable amount of money to figure on for a weekly food cost? Thanks.

I live in Maadi, near the autoroad, a very peaceful area, clean one, no noise, hardly the sound of a morning mosque could be heard, nice people...and I pay monthly for rent 2000 LE, the flat has 2 bedrooms, and others facilities and spaces.
I could say that the price is done in the market, so ask for help an Egyption, he could negociate for you, prices for foreigners are others than for " MASRI"!
Personally I was helped by a lady that by chance it happened to be around there, and a man from the street. The deal was made near a mosque, around the praying time!If you are not informed they ask you huge amount
But in fact, for another thing I want to talk!
NOBODY THAT ASKED FOR INFORMATION OR FOR ANY DETAILS HAS COME BACK HERE TO POST WHAT HAPPENED WITH HIM/ HER,  if it  s ok!  if our advice was useful, or to thank for information!
By the way!  The lady that started the topic came here???  Is  she still in Cairo??

overall you will need at least $ 2,500,000

I don t agree with this amount!
If you come for a holiday, ok, maybe you need it, but if it is really COST OF LIVING,only if you don t care about your money you could spend such a sum here!
I remember that years ago,  attending an international contest for environmental projects, in a luxurious camp, a team presented us in a workshop " Methods and procedures of surviving in the mountains", not only a lecture but demonstrating and practicality how to dig around a tent, for draining water, how to light a fire in rainy weather, and so on!I listened, I practiced... At the final I told them my opinion: IF I GO FOR A VACATION, I WANT TO FEEL COMFORTABLE,NOT TO FIGHT FOR SURVIVING, so better I stay in a warm hotel, nearby the last means of communication, than doing such a thing! Some of them agreed with me, others no! I consider narrow mindedness to have possibilities, to leave a good house to try to survive somewhere without any condition for living.
After years, when I had to face some temporary situations, I was not desperate and I remember what i was taught there, I applied them and I WAS HAPPY,  really happier than I could have great opportunities. Now don t think that i lived in a tent, or I dig ground, for example there i learned to pack things perfect and to choose things that i really need!
And abroad, doesn t mean at home, and it is a challenge to live in other conditions of living, not in poor way and in needs but to rent a very expensive apartment and not to fight to get it just for a cheap price, to have the feeling that you get it well, and you win a good deal, to have that satisfaction!Other way you don t fell that you live!
How many times have you travel incognito?  Why a car to fight in the traffic, and to reach the job full of stress? and a driver?  why not try to do a deal with a taxi driver? they could be proud that you ask them for help, and even in that buses people respect you! not daily, but it is a lesson of life to feel how is really here, and how these people live, and you  ll gain POPULARITY and their LOVE! And eating in very expensive places doesn t mean that you eat well! There are clean and good places, with good prices!
I came back here, cause I feel well and Egyptians are good people, not very frustrated, friendly and they know to appreciate a kind and nice foreign!
BEHAVE NICE AND THEY WILL BE GOOD NEIGHBORS!
So, my opinion for the cost of living is 1500$ for a family, in very good conditions!  with week ends spent outside, visits and of course, wonderful tea and good Egyptian coffee!
ENJOY YOUR TIME HERE,  IN PHARAOHS LAND!

Actually, I'd like to second that post;

I'm looking for a monthly breakdown.

(because that's the pay schedule most TESL websites are advertising)

I'm vegetarian, so food costs remain minimal,
let's say I want a 1 room, in a non-expat part of town

Basically, the few I've seen are saying they give a
housing allowance and 1-3k a month

call me crazy, that doesn't sound like a lot.

Can I get by on 700$ a month there?

i plan to relocate to Cairo
the offer -monthly- is about 5000-5500 US$ + house+car.
Compare to cost of living is that enough???
