I have a few words of advice in regards to preparing for the TOEFL test.

1. It is a highly specialised test with a strong academic element. You will be tested in skills such as synthesising, summarising, reading for details and information, writing academic paragraphs.

2. A native English speaker can help you improving accent and fluency, perhaps, but can hardly make a difference in you passing the test unless he/she is competent in the named test.
Most native speakers will not pass the test themselves unless they have prepared for it and they possess an academic background. Not every native speaker is a language expert or a teacher, despite many institutes are employing any expatriate passing by. TOEFL requires an instructor with English for Academic Purposes expertise.

3. You need a study-to-test approach. Knowing the tricks and bits of the TOEFL will help you avoiding common mistakes, especially in multiple choice answers.

4. You must find a tutor who is familiar and experienced with the TOEFL requirements and objectives, especially if you have short time to prepare for it. He needs to train you to achieve the desired score, not more nor less. If you need to take TOEFL for uni entry or immigration purposes, it all about scoring, not knowing the language.

5. You need to purchase TOEFL preparation books.

When are you going to sit for the actual test?

Why are you taking this test? [Some people take it without knowing why!]

PS. TOEFL is an examination to test English language proficiency in connection to cognition required in an academic /university context. It is not a language certification such as Cambridge Esol, CA, etc.
