My wife is Chinese so what if any advantages does that give me when applying for a visa? Can I get a longer tourist visa for instance? Can I get a long term visa?

You can get a yearly spouse dependent visa courtesy of your marriage to your Chinese wife but that does not give you an advantage into working or having a business here in China. You will need permission and a separate visa for that purpose.

Yes of course there are advantages to staying in the country as a spouse but nothing else. You will still need to renew your spousal visa regularly, you still need a seperate visa for working, but you are still considered a foreigner.

As for your wife having any rights to your homeland, yes she does as your wife irregardless if you are married in China or elsewhere.

I understand from the web that there is no spouse visa in China. Can I anyone point me to evidence that there is?

guy, there is nothing like sponsor visa, what they call sponsor visa is when the girl family are ready to summit there family card for you to extend your visa, and it does not have any legal backing, if the family say no thats all you have to leave,
