Hold on to your belongings!

melis82

I just want to give a heads up to anybody new to China. My friend recently had somebody on a bus steal her new camera and her money and another had her phone stolen the same weekend. My Chinese colleague explained to us that especially around the times of festivals a lot of pickpocketing happens because people are going home to see their families and want to appear rich or successful. I know what it's like to have things stolen so I don't want it happening to anybody else! That is not to say I do not like China. I'm South African, I KNOW what crime is, and China is nowhere on that scale so don't be put off. Just don't trust any strangers and keep your valuables close. Don't carry things in your pocket and keep your bags closed or locked if it is a backpack. And keep your bag in sight! Especially in crowded areas like bus stations and busy streets. I've also been told to be especially careful around airports. These thieves are very crafty. This is not a post to say anything negative about Chinese people, they have their stuff stolen too. It's just those degenerates with no conscience like every country in the world has who think it's ok to help themselves to other peoples belongings. Safe travels  :)
