Introduction of a new member in Thailand forum

ratsso

Hello Everyone,

I'm Jay from the States. I'm thrilled to be in Thailand now ( 2 months), and working on my online business start up. I like to cycle with my road bike, swim at the stadium, party a little but drink only a beer, or glass of wine. Oh and shoot some pool, Texas hold-em poker and travel.
Going to India in November for about month ( 8 hours from Mumbai ), and thinking about Bali next month. It' pretty cheap to fly from BKK, so why not...

Fyi:  For others new here, I have to tell you the internet speeds are not very good in the places I've stayed so far (1.5 - 2.5 Mbps). I'm looking for a condo or apartment now that will let me wire in broadband. I'm paying only $4,8000 baut for this new apartment with 3 month terms (that's not bad), partially furnished. If you're interested in subletting from me let me know. I put in a med.size refer, and kitchenette and everything you need to cook a nice meal. AC and a great view on golf course view.

I'm at solarrayjay at gmail.com if anyone wishes to grab a bit, shoot some pool or what ever.
I speak a little Bahasa Indonesian.

if you are going to work then you need work permits
they are very strict now and will fine you and throw you out of Thailand

You only need to upset one person and they will immediately call immigration and tell them
its your call

I'm in the developing phase of my online, US Based business.  So, it's kind of a secret.

Hi Gino,

I things are pretty much what I expected from all the research I did before I arrived. For one, most of the affordable hotels or condos have fairly weak wi-fi (1.5 - 2.5 Mbps). I'm currently researching a antenna that may help with the single via a usb port. If it works, it could really make things day and night.
Being a vegan (again),  is so great in Thailand. For that matter, being a non-vegan is also. But coming from Hawaii where the food is respectively horrible and expensive, I'm loving it.  I've lost 10 pounds without starving myself !

Jay,
Sounds like you have no regrets on your move.
Having lived in Hawaii myself for a short time I can relate to the cost of everything and not just food while I was there.
I hope to make my move by the first of the year, destination Chiang. Mai.
Also looking forward to the taste of real Fruit again unlike the stuff they pass off coming up from Mexico.

Keep us posted on you discoveries of settling in and the Do"s  & Do not"s of being the new guy in town.

Best of Luck to you.

Gino

Thanks Gino,

Update:  For all you " need-for-speed" online friends, I wanted to share a cafe location that has speeds to 21 Mbps !
Maya center food court area lower level. Look for the little UPS kiosk by the super market. Go out he glass doors and there it is.  Open 9 am - 9 pm. But bring mosquito repellent if you sit outside. and ear plugs. The Mall plays Beethoven 5th and a few others at deafening levels. The cafe is nice inside with AC outlets everywhere.

And while you're down there, check out the vegetarian stall. They sell rice wrapped bambo leaf-mixtures that is truly exotic. The ones in the steamer are sweet, the one in the bowel are not.  Also, sample the seasoned mushrooms that look like chicken. Incredible.

Christine
