Withdraw cash from Vietnamese bank overseas ATM cost

mikedylan2001

Anybody withdraw cash from ATM overseas from Vietnamese bank? I've got cash in Vietnamese Dong stuck in the bank in Vietnam but I've got an ATM card and was thinking of withdrawing British pounds here in the UK from an ATM machine. Obviously it will be an expensive way of doing it. Much more than the usual bank transfer from Vietnam to the UK. But does anyone know exactly how much it will cost. I'm guessing about 10%. As I have no way of checking my balance after I withdraw just wondering if anyone on here has done that and knows.

Before going down that route, why not try adding your Vietnamese debit card to PayPal and paying yourself?

TransferWise works in a similar way also

I have done it in Thailand & Dubai using my Sacombank ATM card & below is a cost summery.

Dear Mr ****When withdraw money at ATM Foreign Bank, you can refer some fees below:
- ATM/POS cash withdrawal: 4% of transaction amount (minimum VND 60,000).
- Foreign currency transaction fee: 3% of transaction amount.
- Foreign transaction processing fee - cross border fee (Applied for payment transactions, online shopping and cash withdrawal - effective from February 4, 2019): 0.8% / transaction (minimum VND 2,000)
- Surcharge fee which is issued by ATM Bank management.

Nice idea but adding your Vietnamese debit card to PayPal and paying yourself PayPal does not allow foreign cards. You have to open a new account for each country apparently.
So is that a total of about 8% when using ATM overseas? And what about the cost when transferring from Vietnam? The normal bank transaction from Vietnam to the UK' costs how many percentage of the total does anybody know?

When transferring from Vietnam to the UK do we normally have to pay Foreign currency transaction fee: 3% of transaction amount? If so that would mean that I would only be paying 5% more if I was to take it out of the ATM machine in the UK? Have I done the number crunching right?

Contact the bank and they can give you the real story not a guess. Each bank set their own rules.

Best way, of course, is to avoid ATMs /banks altogether, and instead find expatriates who want to do the opposite currency trade to yours, and settle at the inter-bank exchange rate. Perhaps this forum could facilitate this, by allowing people wanting to buy or sell foreign currencyΒ  to identify their counterparts?

I can tell you exactly how much you get charged as I used the ATM the other day, I drew out 3 million VND (Β£98.96) and I got charged Β£2.92, I also drew out 2 million VND (Β£65.72) and I got charged Β£1.94.

Hi yes it's about 10%. I did that in Barbados, but when I used it as a debit card for purchases it worked out to be about 5% in fees. This was less painful than withdrawing cash!
