What happens to my estate in case of death?

luckygrandmagk

Hi all,
I read somewhere that in the D.R., when you pass, half of your estate is taken by the government.  Is this true ?

No but unless you protect yourself with a will the taxes will have a healthy meal on you.

Thank you

Bob is correct.   And you will need a will here for any assets here, they are not covered by your will outside of here.  Its a fairly inexpensive process too!

luckygrandmagk

I was wondering that too, thank you.

Actually we were told by our lawyer (part of the biggest firm here) that our US will covers us here as well. Maybe because we don't have Dominican kids or family

Interesting Bob,  I was told the opposite. The law here is territorial based on French law,  the US law is not and that was part of the issue I was told.

Guess we better get more info. AND meanwhile better safe then sorry unless you have little here.

Second option....don't die :D

I like bobs second option.  Maybe the same exact will in both countries, to protect myself and my family.

The will here is different but you can achieve similar results.

YUP  I am up for Bobs option too!!!!!
