Popular jobs in Antwerp and Brussels

caliboyinbelgium

I just arrived from San Francisco, CA & I am looking for work in Antwerp or Brussels. Can anyone advise me on popular jobs for native English speakers?
Also are there specific bars or hang-out hubs where expats go to socialize in both Antwerp and Brussels?

Not aware of any "expat hangouts," sorry. Belgians are perfectly friendly though, don't worry about going into any bar you like the look of. I'm a bit confused; what kind of visa are you here on?

I don't have a job yet as I've only been here 2 weeks. When I lived in foreign countries before, expat hangout bars were very common. I cut down my drinking quite a bit but I still wanted to go to some sort of hang-out to personally network about what jobs I can do and what jobs are popular for native English speakers.
In Japan's corporate world, editing English documents & coaching employees on their negotiating skills in English were popular jobs. I am interested in what jobs are popular for native English peeps here.

Aside of finding an international business company, I don't really know of anything to do with only speaking English. Natives in Flanders all speak Dutch, French, and English at fluent levels, and many can speak German as well. So, speaking only English, which isn't an official language, doesn't really go over well for finding work, unfortunately.

I wouldn't let Melby put a dampener on your move here, I've met expats in Brussels who get by on just speaking English alone and they've been able to find work, it just depends on what you do for a living and if any companies desire the skills you have.

There's a few Irish and Brit bars in Brussels where expats hang out, but I'm sorry, I can't help you when it comes to Antwerp, I very rarely bother going there.

As for all Belgians being able to speak all their native languages? Don't let that worry you, it's a complete myth too.

There's a few of us meeting up in Brussels at O'Reilly's Irish Pub at 5:30pm this saturday, you'd be more than welcome to join us,

By Tram; Stop La Bourse (55-52-81) by taxi; Ask for 1 Place de la Bourse.

Regards.

Much easier to find a job in English in Brussels than Antwerp. Many monolinguals work in specialised jobs such as IT, law, multinationals such as Toyota, DHL, Pfizer. Others work in education such as language schools and/or private lessons, but plenty of very experienced people in this sector.
