Trying to move to Portugal....again.

mintyjamez

Hello everyone. I hope you're all hanging in there, this past year has been a rough ride.

I take care of my mother and have been helping her acquire a D7 visa. In January of 2020 I finally got this visa for her and in March we were set to move to Lisbon Portugal. And by set I mean, all our stuff is currently sitting in a crate awaiting our arrival and the whole country shut down one week before our flights. I was told by the immigration lawyer I was working with in Lisbon that since my mother would not be able to come to Portugal before her temp visa expired I would have to redo the visa. It's been a giant mess and we have been stuck in the states for almost another year since. Trying to figure out to get her moved, what to do with our stuff, can we currently move etc.

The lawyer is taking weeks to reply and has been really unhelpful, doesn't really have answers to any of my questions at this point. Is anyone moving to Portugal from the US right now? If so, how? Are there any lawyers you recommend to help with the visa process since ours is being sketchy? I've been trying to figure this out all on my own and am honestly doing a terrible job. I'm sure there's better ways to go about this then what I'm doing. But currently every ounce of energy and time I have is going into to taking care of mother, we recently moved to Buffalo because its cheaper for her, so I've been dealing with that, I'm just kind of exhausted and in over my head here. I've been working on this for her for three years now and had a friend in Brazil who mentioned reaching out on this site for information.

Please be kind in your responses. Maybe an answer may seem like common sense to you but I am young, overwhelmed, and struggling with what to do next. Any suggestions about lawyers, current visa/moving state in Portugal for Americans ect./helpful tips from when you moved or how you're planning to move would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Hi Welcome.
Due to the pandemic things are not easy. Your lawyer can't give you any replies because nobody knows at the present day. At least until the end of March. And that concerns visas, trips from abroad, etc... Keep on being careful with your mother for a few more months ...

Google tip: search at "D7 Visa lawyer Portugal"

Your LEGAL LAWYER MUST HAVE identified clearly in their "About us" webpages:
"Registo na Ordem dos Advogados" / Portuguese Bar Association registration
and/or
"NIPC" (Número de Identificação de Pessoa Coletiva) / Legal Person ID Number

Choose one with the address in Portugal and get in touch by phone or email. Try to make a skype or zoom session with him/her and explain your problem. It is always easier to talk than to use email. Good luck :)

Hello,

Did you manage to get any more information? There are couple of lawyers who I've worked with here in Portugal, I can check to see if they deal with D7 visas (they are good communicators so they would at least keep you updated even if they can't move things forward at a faster pace!)

Stay safe,

Lisa
