Traveling solo with kids as an expat in Romania

Cheryl

Hello everyone,

During your expat experience in Romania, you may have to travel solo with your kids, either to explore your host country, to visit family and friends in your home country,  or for vacation trips.
While this journey can be a great adventure, it also comes with its challenges. We therefore would like to invite you to share your insights and experiences to help fellow expats make the most of their trips with their children.

Here are a few questions to start with:

How to best prepare for traveling solo with kids?

What are the biggest challenges expat parents in Romania face when traveling solo with their kids?

What specific formalities or documents do you need to travel alone with kids (eg. parental consent for travel, birth certificate, etc.)?

What are your tips to smooth the journey with kids?

Share your experiences, tips and anecdotes to help fellow expats.

Thank you for your contribution.

Dear ²ÝÁñÉçÇøers,

Last Summer I took a trip with my wife and 2 children and 2 friends on a vacation to Maramures.

Landing in Bucharest, we had a car rented from the Airport and proceeded to stay a few days in Brasov with friends.  Heres my story.

How to best prepare for traveling solo with kids?

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE BIGGEST CAR AVAILABLE TO RENT .We rented a SUV that was a little tight on room.  Having 6 pieces of luggage and then some....it was a challenge.

What are the biggest challenges expat parents in Romania face when traveling solo with their kids?

Long(er) hours in a car with that many people can be taxing on the nerves.  I'm 65 and the kids are all teenagers.  We "bonded" but there were times of "stress."  Make sure you take a lot of breaks.

What specific formalities or documents do you need to travel alone with kids (eg. parental consent for travel, birth certificate, etc.)? Having a friend who was only 16, we needed Parental Consent for Travel.  No one ever asked us for it, but I would make sure you had it.

What are your tips to smooth the journey with kids?

Bigger Car, headphones so they can listen to their own music, plan for fun things they can do.
