2014 Catalonian Referendum

Drusilla

My name is Dru, but in Spanish Drusilla sounds exotic.  I'm 56, don't feel it  though, and my husband and I plan to retire to Spain hopefully next year. We meet the requirements of the retirement Visa, but I'm wondering if the 2014 Catalonia referendum towards independence will have any effect. I'm thinking we're ok, should I have any concerns at all?

Hello Dru,

No, don't worry about it! I'm English and live just outside Girona and have no plans to move. My hope is that Madrid and Barcelona will come to a negotiated settlement because both Spain and Catalunya would lose out financially if there was a split. But even if there is a vote in favour of independence next year, Catalunya can't simply walk away, it's far more complicated than that. But I'm in a minority here, most people just want to be rid of Spain.

Best wishes,
Steve
