Obtaining NIE before moving to Tenerife for work (post-Brexit)

phoebetenerife

I urgently need help with obtaining an NIE for my job before moving to Tenerife next month.

The consulate in London will not help me with the process as I intend to move to Tenerife, however for paperwork I need the NIE before then.

The official Spanish government website () shows no available appointments online and I get the message 'call failed' when I try to contact the offices in Santa Cruz and La Laguna directly.

The only other option I can think of is applying via a proxy. In this case, does anyone know of an agency that can do this for me quickly and cheaply?

Furthermore, does anyone have general advice for moving to Spain for work as a British citizen not protected by the withdrawal agreement? I understand that we are now regarded the same as other non-EU citizens but there is very little information online about residency permits, etc. Thank you!

Do you really mean an NIE, that's just a fiscal number which affords no right to live in Spain, or a TIE, which is the permission to reside in Spain ?

phoebetenerife

I believe I will need both TIE and NIE, but my job have specifically said I need to obtain the NIE first. I will need it for tax purposes for my job.

For an NIE you require a valid passport (any nationality) an EX 15 application form, a payment form certified as paid into a bank.

This might help

TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT WITH THE POLICE FOR  NIE.

As you go through you will find links to the application forms and the payment, at any bank, form

.•       GO TO

•             PROVINCES AVAILABLE:       CHOOSE the province where your are living/ staying

•             SECTIONS AVAILABLE IN PROVINCE:          OPEN PAGE AND SELECT SECTION  REQUIRED

e.g.    “policía  certificado de residente o no residente”  (that includes NIE application)

•             ENTER THE DETAILS OF APPLICANT. if you have an NIE show that, if not then show your passport number

•            CHOOSE NATIONAL POLICE STATION FOR APPOINTMENT:      The one that covers the area where you are living – staying. If it does not show up it means there are no appointments available, so try again later.  It will eventually show up.

•             CHOOSE APPOINTMENT,  AND THEN CONFIRM

•             You must PRINT A COPY OF THE APPOINTMENT,   And take it with you to the police station

You can find info here in english about completing the EX15. It is almost the same as for the EX18.

@Phoebe Drummond - Welcome to the board, and good luck with your move to Spain! Tenerife is rather nice, I'm sure you will enjoy it!

@Johncar has explained how to get a NIE by making an appointment in the online system.

This isn't difficult, but it means that you need to be physically in Spain to go to the police station. I think this is the easiest (and cheapest) way, and you simply go out a bit earlier to get it sorted.

If you're there, and you're nervous about Spanish bureaucracy (I know I am!), then you can usually get someone (such as a "gestor") to help you. Many services advertise online too, so you can use one to get your NIE too.

However, I believe (I didn't do this myself) that to do it remotely (while still in the UK), requires that you provide a POA (power of attorney). So now you have the cost of the NIE agent (say 200-300 euros), plus you'll need to go to your local UK notary to certify your POA and your passport (maybe £150 or so), and then you'll get these notarized documents "legalized" in London (another £150 or so), and then courier the docs over (another £50 or so).

As to your more general questions, I think it might be wise to discuss with your Tenerife employer how/when they are getting your work permit.

Because you are absolutely correct that Brits moving now are not covered by the withdrawal agreement, and are no longer EU citizens. So you have to follow the process applied to all non-EU citizens, which typically requires a work permit to take up employment.

If you search online, there are many sites with info about getting residence in Spain. The official government site is packed with info about every residence issue. It's in Spanish (if your Spanish isn't perfect, you can use a browser with automatic language translation).

The immigration portal is here:

This section is for "ciudadanos no comunitarios" (non-EU):

And this is the specific page for "residir / trabajar" (living and working):

Thank you very much for these replies!

Yes, my main issue is with getting the NIE whilst still being in the UK. It sounds like the POA route is a bit expensive but may be my only option due to travel restrictions etc. If anyone can recommend an agency to do so that would be great.

I'll take a look at those links as well.
