The earlier the better, without a valid resident card you are considered an illegal immigrant regardless of your visa validity. You might land on the wrong side of the law

Its a rule. Obviously, breaking the rule will lead to problems (I'm not sure what exactly they are but you are likely to be fined). But what is preventing you from getting your Resident card? You will need it for your safety & convenience.

So if your company PRO resigns and your company takes say 6 months to appoint another, would you be running around without a resident card until then ?!?

If you are caught, your company would get fined and you would be deported, after you finish your prison sentence.
