Getting ready to pack; Suggestions

jswwjw

I have read enough about what not to bring but need a bit of advise on what to bring.  Is the power over there compatible with American 110 plugs and sort? Is there anything you wish you would have brought with you the first visit that you did not?  Is there anything you did bring you wish you would not have.  I have two bags to bring with me so I want to make the right decisions on what to and not-to bring.  Thanks again;  Visa this week and travel next week or so.

Regards;  John

We going into winter now, I was told the weather gets extreem down to Zero. Bring a winter coat.

I wish I had brought more British/saudi (two/three pin) double adaptors.

Alliecat

last winter I never even put on a sweater during the day.. at night, the abaya was enough.  But in the desert, it does get chilly at night.

jswwjw

Do I need an electric adapter.  Sparrow said he wished he had more 2-3 pin adapters.  Sorry but a little confused; are you saying you needed a ground plug (three pin) connector or a reducer from three to two (straight plug). Or, something else.
Thanks.

beezer

You'll be able to find plugs/adapters here. The power here is 110v and 220v. Each have their own sockets.

As for winter, I don't wear anything more than a suit jacket or sweater. The wifey and I turned the heater on for about 3 days I think. But only for a few hrs. So you shouldn't be too worried.

They don't have toothbrush heads for my Sonicare toothbrush here so I bring those. Good pair of real jeans are hard to find, as well as shoes. Everything else is available. You'll find the equivalent of Home Hardware/Home Depot/Best Buy over here.

Nothing else comes to mind really. Oh, having a hard time finding a heating blanket, so picking one up from Canada on my next trip down. (I have back problems, not for the winter)

Anything else, let us know. Good luck. Has work got a place ready for you to settle into?

Do not panic, you can get all the adapters you need from the supermarket. All you need to pack is your passport and visa, other than that bring what you would anyway. you can get pretty much everything you need here.

Beezer; My employer says that they will assist me with locating housing (I have an allowance) but keep your ears open for me and thank you all for this advise and forum.

Fidgety Soul

I m entirely agree with Nelson...Just get yourself here .I know u Americans r tough enough to surive and find your type of fun in any part of world so don't worry :)

jswwjw

Again; thanks y'all

Alliecat

I don't know how tall you are, but MrStretch was very large and he spoke of how difficult it was to find western clothing/shoes in his size.

Also, really .. you can't go wrong bringing a bunch of pairs of shoes/sneakers/sandals.  I don't like the styles and quality here, and I'm not the first person to say so! :)

jswwjw

thanks, I'm 6-1 but hate western wear;  I don't look like a cowboy anyway (lol)

you've a lot to learn.. 'westerners' means people from the WEST (as opposed to the Middle East); ie. Americans, Canadians, Europeans, etc.

I know silly. I was joking.

Well, this is one of the problems with written communication.  Without the laughing emoticon or the winking one, who's to know you're being facetious, even with an 'lol' ?

jswwjw

you gotta admit the cow boy hat comments was at least a bit amusing.  Thanks. :)  better?

Alliecat

dude, go work for Aramco! Plenty of cowboy hats there

Preoria

I myself am packing right now and I can't stop laughing about this cowboy wear thing. This is hilarious! :P

Chaps: check. Boots: check. Wranglers: check.

Alliecat

Wow.. why'd you mention chaps?

Makes me think of a male stripper I once saw :lol:

Preoria

Jeez, YOU said that, not me. :D

Alliecat

well yeah but YOU brought up chaps

Preoria

...And now I'm thinking about one, too. Thanks a lot! This definitely will not help me focus on packing! ;)

Alliecat

See what you started, jswwjw??!!??

jswwjw

Don't  hate the player hate the game.

Alliecat

who said we're hating it?

Salman Omrani

John and preoria. welcome to the Kingdom, you two sound like a fun bunch :D

Salman

Alliecat

Yeah, I'm liking Preoria.  We seem to share some common history

MisterStretch

I wish I had brought more British/saudi (two/three pin) double adaptors.

Why?  They are 2 Riyal apiece and you can find them virtually everywhere.  They even come in two different colors; white and caramel.

Drop in a SACO if there is one near you.  If not, find out the street nearest you that has a collection of electricians' shops.  They all have them.

I don't know how tall you are, but MrStretch was very large and he spoke of how difficult it was to find western clothing/shoes in his size.

The cat is right about that.  Except for the sometime special in Carrefour, you are hard-pressed to find larger sizes in KSA.  If your shoe is 12 or over, bring shoes (and sandals).  If you are over a 38 waist or a 32 inseam...bring a few extra clothes.

If you are in Riyadh proper, it really doesn't get very cold...so a light - medium jacket did it for me.

Oh, and bring a Stetson.  You're gonna need it on Disco Night.

jillndave

Stop it, I'm in tears here and it's not because of the onions.
:lol::lol::sosad::lol::sosad::lol::sosad:

I may not have boots or a Stetson but I have a big whip.

jillndave

I cut the 2 pin plug off and fitted 3 pin plugs to them all but I had to bring the right size fuses from UK. I couldn't find 3, 5 or 10 amp fuses.  Even my side light had a 13 amp fuse when I checked. It would have been on fire before the fuse blows.

Shocking.

And Dave also rides a 2 wheeler while yanking his whip....
