no problems in istanbul but i have no clues about other places. they told me everywhere is ok except for southeast provinces, but i have no direct experience avout that.
anyway, istanbul is far more developed that most european cities in terms of security and public transportation. And people are extremely kind with foreigners, one could not even imagine they are so willing to help.

It is a normal country, I wouldnt worry and you already want to go to normal cities.

You know, terrorism is not os big as it is served in Media.. I was in southeastern provinces, I was afraid at first, but all Turkish people are very friendly and they help you anytime.. If you walk in New York streets after sunset, you may lose your life.. Be sure that Turkey is much safer than many countries:) In major cities, ladies with mini-skirts can walk till the sun-rise, no harm happens to them.. Helping tourists, ladies, etc is an important cultural rule... But if a lady wears too sexy, may be some men ask if she wants a one nihgt adventure.. some may forget to ask and directly start the adventure :)

We have been to all of these places, and the touristic areas are all fine. You may acquire several "Turkish Uncles" if you like to talk to people. Most shop keepers will offer you tea and free advice.
