hi tom,
i lived in vancouver for a year and loved it. it is an expensive city from a cost of living standpoint, but the quality of life is higher than other cities. the proximity to natural beauty and outdoor sports/recreational venues enhances just about everyone. i also don't think folks there "live to work", instead they clock off and enjoy the many things vancouver has to offer. sure it rains, but over all, the pace is laid back. i know the restaurant business is frenetic but i wouldn't be surprised if you could hook up with new colleagues and take in some of the sites. two good online blogs worth checking out restaurants are "chowhound" chow.com; and "urban spoon" urbanspoon.com. might be worth checking out to see what's currently on people's radar.

good luck
