The retreat of covid in Manaus has stunned front-line medical workers there.
The city did not impose lockdowns and quarantines.

A theory of why covid deaths and hospitalizations have plummeted in Manaus:
herd immunity does not require a 70 percent infection rate in the populace.

厂辞耻谤肠别:听
Article is titled "In the Brazilian Amazon, a sharp drop in coronavirus
聽 聽 sparks questions over collective immunity"....

Population of metro Manaus, Brazil, is 2.6 million as of 2018, per Wikipedia.

I live in Manaus.聽 The collapse of the pandemic here -- at least for now -- is not hard to understand.聽

We were one of the first cities in Brazil to be infected; the virus arrived here directly from Europe and, since we're so isolated from the rest of Brazil, there's been little or no re-infection from the rest of the country.聽 Because of the way it arrived and different from some cities, at first covid was restricted to the richest neighborhoods, and then spread gradually to the general population.聽 It seems to have burned through the most susceptible populations, then burned itself out.

Efforts at social distancing have had limited success, although more than the article credits.聽 Businesses and restaurants were closed for over a month, and while I heard about heavy traffic in some outlying bairros, in Centro where I live and other commercial districts,聽 traffic was like Sunday afternoon,聽 all day every day.聽 Also, the amount of natural social distancing here is often overlooked.聽 The State of Amazonas is a little bigger than Alaska, and half the population lives in the capital.聽 Outside Manaus, people are very widely separated.聽 And even in the city, there's a lot of separation.聽 In land area, Manaus is over twice as big as Delaware.聽 The urbanized zone is 2/3 the size of Chicago, with about 2/3 the population spread over the whole. Daytime temperatures vary within a narrow band of between about 85 and 95 degrees Fahrenheit, all year round.聽 And as stated, the population is young.

We're still wearing masks and avoiding crowds, but I'm cautiously optimistic.

Only slightly off-topic:

A guy goes into a bar and orders a Corona and two hurricanes.聽 The barkeeper holds out his hand and says, "That'll be 20.20."

stay safe. stay connected.聽 I'm relying on you guys as I go into my countdown to moving.聽 Thanks.

India has recorded more than 90,000 new cases of covid in the past 24 hours.

That is a lot.聽 Still, why is that worth noting on the Brazil forum?

Because with this latest day of outbreaks, India -- with 4.2 million cases -- has surpassed Brazil for the dubious distinction of second most cases of coronavirus in the world.

The only country with more covid cases than India is the one led by the world's most dangerous man.
