I'd say that, realistically, your chances of getting a meaningful employment in Ecuador are not good, considering your age and passable Spanish; unless you are really-really top-notch in something.
English schools (Wall Street Institute, Washington Institute etc) might hire you as native speakers for conversations with students. I have no idea how much they pay, my guess is not a lot.
Anything you might do on your own: selling something on eBay, some kind of small business - is better than an employment in Ecuador.
Salary is another thing. An average young engineer-graduate is offered aroung $600 a month. 
I know some people working for the government or oil companies get 4-5K a month, but besides being excellent specialists and having solid connections they are EXTREMELY lucky.

Hi mappam,sounds like you two are in the same boat as us sort of.My best suggestion is do the math Florida/Ecuador cost of living.I have been for a year now Alaska/Ecuador.The medical cost in Ecuador alone makes it worth it for us,and we are reasonalbly healthy for in our 60s.  I'm Lee, [the adventurer ha! ha!] my wife is Peggy. You can live on the SS money.  If you want to buy, most who buy pay cash.  The banks can demand as much as 30% down and the interest rates are much higher than the states.  We rent with no plans to buy.  Also know that with a retired visa you can not be out of the country for more than 90 days in the first 18 months nor can you work. But you can open a business.  Not sure of all the rules.  People live on less than your SS and, according to their testimony, do quite well.  Why don't you both come down for a few weeks and see what you think?

Ditto on the above posts. Welcome to cuenca. Once you arrive come visit Zoe´s on Friday night. Get a rounded perspective frm many epats whom have been in country for several weeks to several years.
