Hola.

I am thinking of retiring in the Cuzco area of Peru and am puzzled about the Visa process.聽 My understanding is that I need to have lived in Peru for at least a year before I am eligible for residency, and yet a temporary visa is good for only 180 days at the most.聽聽What's the basic process for someone who wishes to stay full-time?聽 My monthly social security meets the financial requirement as I understand it.

Check the LimaEasy website for an article, actually a series of articles, that will take you through the process step-by-step. It's not difficult, just a bit time consuming for certain things - such as documents that you need from the home country. Once you're in their system, in the process, for obtaining a residency visa, Rentista Visa in your case, the limited stay is no longer limited. If/when you choose to actually leave the US get the SS Benefits Letter and the FBI/or/State Police Report apostilled before you leave and then get them translated and apostilled in Peru. If you don't you will be paying for DHL and it's not cheap.
