Norwegian moving to Bulgaria

Lars Norberg

Hello everybody!

My name is Lars, I'm a 46 year old man from Norway. I am self-employed and earn my money online, through something as untraditional as gaming modifications. I make gaming mods online, and this has become my primary income!

I'm going to Plovdiv, Bulgaria March 7th. I have booked an airbnb from March 6th. Why am I a day late? Flights. Hard to make them fit when you travel on a budget. I'm staying for at least a month, though my intention is to stay for much longer. Months, years, possibly.

So I'm looking to connect with any and all expats in Plovdiv that can help me relocate, settle in, learn the language and so on.

Anyway, hi everybody! :)

Welcome to the expat.com forum and good luck with your move to Bulgaria!

Plovdiv is a great little city, I highly recommend it. But Bulgaria has lots to offer outside Plovdiv. The Rila National Park (near Bansko) and the Central Balkan National Park (near Karlovo) are spectacular, and excellent options if you like an outdoorsy life. And the cost of living is agreeably low, especially if you make your money remotely. Excellent connectivity too, so working from home is usually no problem even in small villages (we have fibre internet at our country house).

@Lars Norberg Hi Lars, I've lived shortly in Norway on two occasions in my youth, and I have great memories on both occasions from your country.

I am not in aplovdiv but I will be happy to help you if you need something.***

Hi again folks!

Any expats in here that just want to connect, and aren't looking to sell me things?

I am looking for interactions, experiences and companions.

@Lars Norberg Hi Lars, I'm sure you'll love Plovdiv. My wife and I have lived here almost 5 years now.

I hate to recommend Facebook but it's used extensively here for arranging events, we found the group '²ÝÁñÉçÇøs in Plovdiv ' really useful when we moved over and made some good Bulgarian and foreign friends there.

There are regular meetups most Wednesdays at the Jazz Cafe where you can meet interesting people and there's usually at least one big monthly meetup.

Language wise we found the app Mondly useful for picking up some basics and getting used to the cyrillic alphabet.

@PlovdivEd Thank you for your reply! For some reason I missed this, or missed the notification mail.

I've been in Plovdiv a few days now, and though it was much to get accustomed to coming straight from winter Norway, I really like the city so far. There's a lot of everything here. Language is a problem, but currently not a gamebreaking one. I mostly shop at larger shops like Kaufland, and there's not many more words being spoken than "good day" there. Which I have learned to say. Because everybody says it to me all the time. After a mere 4 days it's turning into a reflex.

Google Maps tells me that the Jazz Cafe, if it is the one close to that archaelogical museum, is a 7 minute walk from where I'm staying. So it's not unlikely that I'll drop by it next Wednesday! :)

And facebook, even though I'm not a fan, really is a good place to find things. Especially for people my age. It's just the social media that everybody 35+ is on.
