Applying for NI Number without address

GuestPoster1100

I will move to Cambridge in a few weeks and I already have a job (short-term internship). I was informed that I need to apply for a NI Number and for that I'll need to provide proof of accommodation. I booked a room on AirB&B for the first month and in the meanwhile I'll look for a definitive room (the remaining 5 months). What is the best option? Should I wait until I find a room with a contract and in the meantime I use a temporary NI Number (how do I get one?), or should I use an on-line service like NINOAPPLY (they provide a temporary mailing box)?

Hi and welcome to the Forum.

You can use the Services of someone like NINOAPPLY, but they will charge you money for something you can easily do yourself.  The process you have to follow is described on the UK Gov website; this will take you there.

Hope this helps.

I know that the process is free, but I don't mind paying a small fee if it's helpful. I also know how the process works. The problem is the proof of accommodation: I simply won't have one right away.

Welcome to the Forum :)

All the information you need can be found on the government website, this will take you there. Please use do NOT use any other sites that offer you a number, they often charge you which is illegal and a scam.

Any other questions you may have, feel free to come back to us.

Hi again.

If you read the link I provided, you will see that you do not need to register straight away and even if for whatever reason you want to, you can use the AirBNB address.

I read the instructions on that website, as I said already. Those services do not provide you with a NI number, they just help you with the process. In particular, I'm interested in the possibility of using their address as proof of accommodation. Thanks.

You are only able to get one when you are in the UK.

Yes I know. But I rent a room on AirB&B for the first month so technically I do not have an address or even a contract to give at the interview. Some hosts on the AirB&B forum were not happy of letting the guests using their address.

Hi again.

I've explained the process; if you wish to ignore my advice and create problems that don't exist, then that is entirely your privilege; I shall leave you to it at this point.

I wish you the best of luck during your internship.
